How to clean grapefruit

Sometimes the pleasure of eating citruses spoils an uncomfortable way to clean them. The peel can be difficult to remove, and the flesh is separated by hard, bitter membranes, in addition, in all citrus fruits there are seeds that cannot be chewed. Some people are annoyed by the smell of essential oil that remains on their hands after cleansing the fetus, while others are unhappy that a lot of valuable juice is lost when cleaning it. In order not to give up healthy juicy fruits, eat them whole or add to culinary dishes, remember a few tricks on how to conveniently peel a grapefruit.

How to peel a grapefruit

Pink grapefruit is one of the largest citrus fruits. Usually he is dressed in a thick peel and densely filled with juice. It is used as a dessert, added to salads and cold snacks, and also squeezed juice for drinking or marinades. Fruit zest is used in baking and sweets. In any case, the fruit must be properly cleaned in order to maintain its quality and beneficial properties.

Step-by-step recommendations on how to clean grapefruit

First of all, the fruit must be washed from dirty plaque and wax, which is often lubricated for storage. Rinse the fruit in warm water and wipe it with paper towels - mechanical action will remove the dirt completely. To use the zest, the fruit must be doused with boiling water.

Cleaning without removing the zest
If grapefruit is needed for juice, there is a secret to its high-quality squeeze. It will be especially useful for those who do not have a citrus juicer. Before the procedure, roll the fruit in a peel on the table - this will compress the pulp and it would be better to peel off the membranes and give the juice. Then the grapefruit is cut into two halves and the juice survives, you can even do this manually.

If the fruit needs to be served, halves cut with the skin are presented with a special spoon and the pulp is cleaned with it. You can also do it if the prescription needs half-slices of fruit. Cut a whole grapefruit in half, use a thin knife and a spoon: cut the slices and take them out with a spoon from the white film "envelopes".

The method of preserving juice
If the peel interferes, it is removed. You can cut the peel 0.5 cm in depth along the "equator" - that is, in the middle. Then take a dessert spoon and paste under the peel parallel to the pulp. With a spoon, you need to process the whole fruit in a circle, as if separating the peel from the inside. First one half, remove the "dome" of the skin, then the other half as well.

Another way is to cut the peel by 0.5 cm, like a watermelon - into 6 slices, without getting to the pulp. Then remove the skin with your hands. For those who are allergic to citrus oil, you can use plastic gloves, put the fruit in a bag or a couple of layers of cling film - and peel off the peel through the protective layer. For the same purpose, paper towels will help. They won’t completely protect your hands from oil splashes, but they will absorb its excess, and this will ensure tidiness on the table.

The resulting peeled fruit is divided into slices, dressed in white skin. If you let them dry, the fruit will be very easy to peel. Further, it will only be necessary to tear off the seam (a narrow thread that was located at the core) or cut it - and remove the films, removing whole pieces of pulp.

Useful advice: do not throw away the membranes from the grapefruit. Of these, you can insist on a very useful facial tonic or hair rinse with the function of controlling oilyness and moisturizing the skin.

Chef's way of cleaning
First you need to cut off the "caps" at the poles of citrus. Then cut the zest parallel to the slices, capturing a little pulp and removing the entire white layer. Then, with the help of a knife, the flesh is cut out of each “compartment” in two movements along the membranes. This method of peeling grapefruit is quick, but a lot of juice is lost in the process.

Peel removal
To get the aromatic zest, which is most often added to baked goods, meat or cocktails, the peel must be washed. And after that you can use 3 tools:

  1. Special knife. It looks like a potato peeler and cuts the zest into thin strips, which is useful for decorating dishes.
  2. The usual fine grater. With its help, you can get fragrant gruel from the zest.
  3. Kitchen knife. Cut the zest with a thin layer without touching the white pulp so that the additive does not bite.

Fruit Suggestions

Different grapefruit varieties may be suitable for a variety of culinary tasks. For juice, choose thin-bodied weighty fruits with a blush on the peel. Such a fruit will be sweet and juicy.

For fruit salads it is better to choose fleshy fruits. Thick-skinned fruits usually have a bitter taste, a reddish peel indicates ripeness and high sugar content. In bright fruits, there is a lot of carotene and useful acid. Given the composition of the dish - be it a fruit salad, an appetizer for sandwiches or sauce - choose the right shade of taste.
